Notre Dame sacred place PARIS BY EMY trip planner

Paris Sacred Places 15

Paris Sacred Places

Paris Sacred Places: First of all, you have to know that Paris is a Catholic stronghold with its 160 catholic churches, Notre Dame cathedral, Sacred Heart Basilica, Sainte Chapelle, Saint Germain-des-Près Abbey, and many other churches in Paris.

Furthermore, you have hundreds houses of worship to discover within Paris. From all religions, conservative or reformist or liberal such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, you will find what you are looking for.  It is the same for all communities — African, American, Arabic, Asian, European, Indian, Latino or Hispanic, Maghreb or Middle-East, Russian…

Spiritual Experience

Indeed, I would be more than happy to show you the churches of Paris as a licensed Christian Guide. We could share a celebration. You have the option with churches to have private tours. Parishioners, guides and volunteers offer those tours. Indeed, it is a great source of spiritual and true human exchanges. Every church of Paris has its own story with its architecture, its sacred arts, and its Saints. The Cathedral of Notre Dame, the most visited place in the entire Europe, has about 14 millions of visitors every year.

Symbolic and theological tradition

A Christian church is traditionally oriented from west to east, following a symbolic and theological tradition that developed in early Christianity. The main entrance is usually on the west side of the church. Worshippers enter from the west and move eastward through the nave toward the altar.

The altar and sanctuary are traditionally placed toward the east, because the east is associated with the rising sun and symbolizes Christ as the Light of the World and the Resurrection.

This movement from west to east represents a spiritual journey: leaving behind the darkness of the old world and moving toward divine light and salvation.

In many medieval churches, such as Gothic cathedrals, this orientation was carefully planned. The western façade often served as the public entrance and displayed scenes of the Last Judgment, reminding visitors of the path between earthly life and eternity.

The eastern apse housed the altar, often illuminated by morning light through stained-glass windows, creating a symbolic connection between divine light and worship.

There are exceptions: geographical constraints, urban planning, or local traditions sometimes changed the orientation. For example, some churches face different directions while maintaining the symbolic arrangement of entrance, nave, and sanctuary.

Church, Cathedral & Basilica: Understanding the Differences

Church: A general place of Christian worship where a community gathers for prayer and religious services. Any Christian place of worship can be called a church.

Cathedral: A church that is the official seat of a bishop (the cathedra, or bishop’s chair). It is the main church of a diocese and often a major historical or architectural landmark.

Basilica: A church that has been granted a special honorary title by the Pope because of its historical, spiritual, or architectural importance. A basilica does not necessarily have a bishop’s seat.

Paris’ sacred places are more than architectural masterpieces; they are living witnesses to centuries of faith, history, art, and human stories. Exploring its churches, cathedrals, and basilicas offers a deeper understanding of Parisian heritage and the spiritual traditions that continue to shape the city today.
